Samsons Fall to Lumberjacks

Samsons Fall to Lumberjacks

The season came to an end for the GCC Samsons Women's Basketball Team on Saturday, March 1st.  The Samsons fell to the Lumberjacks of Dakota College Bottineau 85-62 in Region 13 play on the campus of the United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, ND.

The opening quarter was an exciting one that featured 6 lead changes and 5 ties.  DCB went ahead 4-0 to start the game, then Freshman Sydney Saari drilled a 3-pointer with 8:40 left in the quarter to put the Samsons on the board.  Both teams traded baskets for the next minute and a half, but Sophomore Kate Borseth drained a 3-pointer from the wing, giving the Samsons their first lead, 7-6.  Things went back and forth during this exciting quarter, as it was again tied at 19-19 with 20 seconds left.  Sophomore Lilly Johnson nailed two 3-pointers in the quarter to help keep the Samsons close, but unfortunately, the Lumberjacks went on a 4-0 run to close out the quarter and GCC trailed 23-19.

The Lumberjacks scored 6 straight points to start the second quarter, but another 3-pointer from Borseth and a bucket inside from fellow Sophomore Melissa DiGiorgio, cut the DCB lead to 5, 29-24.  Unfortunately, this was the closest GCC would get as the Lumberjacks outscored the Samsons 30-16 in the quarter and DCB took a 53-35 lead into halftime.

The Samsons struggled to get things going offensively in the third quarter, and DCB's size and defensive pressure forced GCC to turn the ball over. The Lumberjacks outscored GCC 19-5 in the quarter and DCB lead 72-40 after three quarters.

The Samsons found rhythm offensively in the final quarter, outscoring the Lumberjacks 22-13 in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell 85-62.

Borseth lead all scorers with 25 points, including five 3-pointers.  DiGiorgio had a double-double as she scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

GCC finishes the season just below .500, with an overall record of 11-12
