
The GCC Samsons won big over the Detroit Community Christian College on February 1st on the GCC campus in Ironwood, MI. Behind 29 points from Sophomore Kate Borseth, the Samsons dominated the Lions 96-56.
DCCC grabbed the momentum early and took advantage of a slow shooting start from GCC. The Lions outscored the Samsons 22-10 in the opening quarter and GCC needed to regroup and refocus. The Samsons did just that as GCC flipped the script in the second quarter and outscored DCCC 19-8, and the Lions went into halftime clinging to a 1-point lead as the halftime score was 30-29.
The Samsons struck first in the third quarter as Sophomore Annabelle Besonen drilled her second 3-pointer on the first GCC possession less than 30 seconds into the quarter. That put the Samsons up 32-30 and they wouldn't relinquish the lead. Besonen's triple was one of 7 made 3-pointers in the quarter for GCC. Borseth began to take over halfway through the quarter as she scored 8 consecutive points for the Samsons including back-to-back triples. GCC exploded for 36 points in the third quarter and limited the Lions to only 14 points as the Samsons had a 65-44 advantage going into the final quarter.
Borseth started the fourth quarter with another triple and she added two more in the final quarter, bringing her game total to seven 3-pointers. Fellow Sophomore Lilly Johnson, who started this contest, drilled two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for GCC. The Samsons continued to roll offensively as they outscored DCCC 31-12, giving GCC the 96-56 victory.
Borseth led all scorers with 29 points, including seven 3-pointers and a game-high 11 assists and 5 steals. Johnson had one of her best performances with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. Melissa DiGiorgio had yet another double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Sydney Saari chipped in with 14 points and 7 rebounds. The Samsons outrebounded the Lions 50-44. GCC also shared the ball extremely well, finishing with 28 assists and 8 of the 9 Samsons who played in the game scored.
