The GCC Samsons picked up another 2025 win as they beat the Central Lakes College-Brainerd Raiders 53-42 on Saturday, January 11th in Ironwood, MI.
The Samsons won the tip-off and immediately scored inside to start the game. The Raiders came down and drilled a 3-pointer, but GCC's Melissa DiGiorgio hit one of her own from beyond the arc and the Samsons took back the lead. The low scoring first quarter went back and forth, and the Raiders went ahead 11-8 as the quarter ended.
DiGiorgio started the second quarter off with a bang as she drilled another 3-point shot to tie the game at 11. GCC Freshman RaeLynn Robinson split a pair from the charity stripe on the next possession and the Samsons took the lead and never gave it back to the CLC Raiders. GCC spent the rest of the quarter building the lead as they went into halftime ahead 26-17.
GCC Freshman Sydney Saari scored to start the third quarter but then fouls started to add up for the Samsons. Robinson was whistled for an offensive foul with 6:23 left in the quarter. This was big for GCC as this was the fourth personal foul on the starting guard. CLC was able to trim the Samson lead down to five points two different times with less than three minutes in the third quarter, but a huge 3-pointer from Sophomore Annabelle Besonen and a technical foul on the Raiders swung back the momentum to the Samsons. They finished the quarter up 42-35.
The Raiders scored immediately to begin the final quarter, then Robinson fouled out of the game with 8:42 left as she fouled a CLC player who was in the act of shooting a 3-pointer. Luckily for the Samsons, CLC only made one of the three free throws. The Raiders cut the GCC lead down to four points on two different occasions, but Sophomore Kate Borseth scored 5 consecutive points for GCC that sealed the game for the Samsons. The second basket, a 3-pointer, came with 2:24 remaining, which put GCC up 52-42. Borseth was fouled near the end of the game when the Raiders had to intentionally foul and she split the final pair from the line, giving the Samsons the 53-42 victory.
GCC was lead by Borseth who scored 14 points. DiGiorgio also scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds and 3 steals. Besonen chipped in with 5 points, 9 rebounds and was key defensively for the Samsons, especially in the second half. Saari also had 9 points for GCC.
