Samsons Fall to Skippers in Opener

Samsons Fall to Skippers in Opener

The GCC Samsons fell to the Skippers of St Clair County Community College 108-57 at the Petoskey Plastics Arena on Friday, November 1st.  Despite a close first half, the Skippers outscored the Samsons 61-23 in the second half to secure the victory.

St Clair CC took an early 6-0 lead, but GCC quickly responded with a 7-0 run of their own to take the lead with two buckets from Sophomore Melissa DiGiorgio and a 3-pointer from Freshman Brooke Stanislawski.  Although the Skippers scored inside to stop the GCC run, the Samsons took the lead back again after a 3-pointer from Sophomore Kate Borseth and a bucket inside from Sophomore Abbie Legault.  The Skippers took the lead back to end the quarter and they were up 18-15 on the Samsons after the opening quarter.

GCC hit three 3-pointers in the first few minutes of the second quarter, but St Clair CC's offense was starting to heat up as well and the Skippers extended their lead to 36-24 with four minutes remaining in quarter.  Fouls began to add up for GCC as Borseth and Freshman Gracie Kleikamp both picked up their second personal foul and DiGiorgio was called for her third. The Skippers used this momentum to lead 47-34 going into halftime.

More foul trouble and strong rebounding from the Skippers made the third quarter tough for GCC.  Borseth picked up her third foul with 7:17 left and DiGiorgio was whistled for her fourth with 5:14 to play.  Kleikamp scored 5 points to finish the quarter for GCC, but St Clair CC lead 74-45 after three quarters.

The Skippers saved their best offensive output for the final quarter, outscoring the Samsons 34-12 in the final period, giving St Clair CC the 108-57 win.

DiGiorgio and Kleikamp led GCC with 14 points each and Stanislawski chipped in 10 points.

The Samsons play Oakland Community College on Saturday, November 2nd in Petoskey, MI.
