Samsons Run Past Iron Hawks

The GCC Samsons defeated the Minnesota North-Vermillion Iron Hawks 86-55 on Wednesday, January 22nd in Ely, MN. 

The Iron Hawks took an early 6-0 lead on GCC, but Sophomore Kate Borseth finally got the Samsons on the board with a 3-pointer with 7:31 left in the opening quarter.  Vermillion kept attacking GCC and held the edge over the Samsons, 21-17 after the initial quarter.  

The second quarter was back and forth, and the lead changed hands a few times.   The Samsons took a three-point lead after Sophomore Melissa DiGiorgio scored and was fouled.  She drilled the free throw with just under five minutes to go before halftime.  The Iron Hawks took the momentum and the lead back to head into the locker room ahead 34-30.  

The Samsons came out firing in the second half and outscored the Iron Hawks 56-21.  GCC was propelled by great second half shooting, particularly from Freshmen Sydney Saari and Brooke Stanislawski.  En route to their 86-55 victory, Saari scored 14 of her 17 in the second half, while Stanislawski scored 16 of her 23 in the second half.  

Stanislawski paced GCC with 23 points.  Borseth had 19, including five 3-pointers, along with 7 rebounds and four assists.  Saari scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.   DiGiorgio chipped in 7 points and 10 rebounds.
