Sharp-Shooting Pioneers Top Samsons

Two women on the basketball court, fighting for the basketball.

Behind eleven made 3-pointers in the game, the sharp-shooting Pioneers of Northland Community & Technical College defeated the GCC Samsons 80-45 on Saturday, January 20th at the Lindquist Center on the Ironwood, MI campus.

NCTC came out firing and immediately went up 8-0.  GCC Freshman Lilly Johnson got the Samsons on the board when she drilled a 3-pointer with 6:26 to go in the opening quarter.  The Pioneers controlled the rest of the quarter as they went on a 10-0 run and led 18-3 with 1:16 left.  Samson Sophomore Kylee Hewitt hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key as the quarter ended, and NCTC was ahead 18-6.

GCC Sophomore Hanna Hoskin hit a 3-pointer of her own as the second quarter began, but NCTC quickly matched that on their next possession.  Although the Samsons started to find more of an offensive flow in second quarter, the Pioneers kept their balanced and steady offense rolling and extended their lead to 18 points with 1:18 remaining as they led 35-17.  Freshman Kate Borseth attacked the basket on the next GCC possession.  Borseth hit the bucket and was fouled in the process.  Although she missed the free throw, the Samsons didn't allow the Pioneers to score on their next possession.  Right after this defensive stand from the Samsons, Hoskin drilled a short jumper with 32 seconds to bring the score to 35-21.   The back-to-back GCC baskets gave the Samsons some great momentum and they needed to get one final stop on defense to keep NCTC's lead at 14.  Unfortunately, GCC allowed the Pioneers to get a shot off before the second quarter ended and NCTC drilled a 3-pointer.  The Pioneers led 38-21 at the half.

NCTC outscored GCC 42-24 in the second half and ultimately came away with the 80-45 victory.

Borseth finished with a game high 16 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists. Despite receiving the bulk of the defensive attention from the Pioneers, which included multiple double and triple-team defensive pressures, Hewitt still put up a double-double for the Samsons.  She finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks.

GCC's next contest is on Wednesday, January 24th, as the Samsons will host Minnesota-North Vermillion.  Tip-off is set for 5:00 pm.
