The GCC Samsons fell 70-35 to the Pioneers of Northland Community & Technical College on Saturday, February 17th, in Thief River Falls, MN.
The Pioneers took control early and rolled to a 12-0 early lead. The Samsons finally got on the board when Sophomore Kylee Hewitt scored inside with 5:12 to go in the opening quarter. Unfortunately, GCC would only score one more basket in the quarter and NCTC rolled to a 19-4 first quarter lead.
The Pioneers extended their lead to 22-4 as the second quarter began, but Hewitt drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 8:10 left to get GCC on the board in the second quarter. Freshman Lilly Johnson hit another 3-pointer for the Samsons midway through the quarter, but then GCC went over three minutes without scoring and the Pioneers went into halftime ahead 40-12.
NCTC's steady offense continued in the second half, as the Pioneers outscored the Samsons 24-9 in the third quarter, taking a 64-21 lead heading into the final quarter. GCC finally found some offensive flow and outscored the Pioneers 14-6 in the fourth quarter. NCTC had already built a solid lead and came away with a 70-35 victory.
Hewitt paced GCC with another double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Freshman Kate Borseth chipped in 8 points, including shooting 5-5 from the free throw line.
