The Central Lakes College-Brainerd Raiders topped the GCC Samsons 58-39 on Saturday, February 10th, at the LSCC on the campus of GCC in Ironwood, MI.

The Samsons struck first as Sophomore Kylee Hewitt found Freshman Vanessa Weber inside for an easy basket.  The Raiders responded by scoring on back-to-back possessions, but Hewitt got herself in great position down low and she hit a tough left-handed shot in the paint. Although GCC only trailed by one point (5-4) after the Hewitt basket, the Raiders scored ten unanswered points and extended the lead to 11 (15-4), with just under three minutes left in the opening quarter.  The CLC full court press created turnovers for the Raiders and GCC had trouble scoring once they did break the press.  The stalled Samson offense led to only 8 points scored in the quarter and the Raiders led 21-8 as the opening quarter ended.

The second quarter started out well for GCC as they immediately began to cut into the CLC lead.  The Samsons went on an 8-4 run to start the quarter, and they cut the lead to single digits (25-16) with 5:57 to go.  Unfortunately, the Raiders responded with a run of their own.  CLC held the Samsons to just two more points in the quarter and outscored GCC 14-2, which gave the Raiders a 39-18 lead heading into halftime.

The Raiders continued to use their balance of size inside and solid perimeter shooting outside as they built their largest lead of the game, 26 points, (50-24) with just under two minutes to go in the quarter.  GCC Freshman Annabelle Besonen drilled a 3-pointer on the final Samson possesion of the quarter, and GCC trailed 50-27.

The Samsons committed two fouls to begin the final quarter, and the Raiders hit 3 of 4 attempts from the charity stripe.  GCC then hit 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Freshman KD Beeksma nailed the first one and then Hewitt hit one of her own with 7:20 to go.  GCC then hit another scoring drought and the Raiders came away with a 58-39 win.

Hewitt led all scorers with 18 points.  She also chipped in 6 rebounds.

GCC has a double header next weekend as they play at Minnesota-North Itasca on Friday, 2/16 and at NCTC on Saturday, 2/17.
