Hewitt Leads Samsons Over Ironhawks

Samsons women's basketball team gathered in a circle around the coaches on the basketball court.

Fueled by 33 points and 13 rebounds from Sophomore Kylee Hewitt, the GCC Samsons topped the Ironhawks of Minnesota North-Vermillion 84-38 on Wednesday, January 24th on the campus of GCC in Ironwood, MI.

With fellow Sophomore Hanna Hoskin out for this contest due to injury, the Samsons only suited up 7 players, 6 of whom were freshman.  Hewitt led all scorers, but all 7 available players for GCC scored and contributed to other facets of the game. Overall, it was a solid team win for the Samsons.

Although the Ironhawks took the lead 2-0 to start the game, Vermillion would not hold the lead again. The Samsons only allowed 8 points in the first quarter and led by Hewitt, GCC jumped to an early lead of 18-8 after the opening quarter.

The second quarter began just like the first quarter, as the Ironhawks scored first.  However, the Samsons quickly answered and outscored Vermillion 17-10 in the second quarter.  GCC went into the locker room up 35-18.

6 of the 7 active players scored in the opening half for GCC, which was led by Hewitt.  Kylee had 13 and 8 rebounds in the first half, as her toughness and persistence in the paint paid off. Freshman Kate Borseth, who was celebrating her birthday, had 10 points at the half.

GCC's offense exploded in the second half as the Samsons outscored the Ironhawks 49-20.  GCC was also running on all cylinders defensively, particularly in fourth quarter, as the Samsons only allowed the Ironhawks to score 5 points in the final quarter.

Hewitt had a monster second half for the Samsons, scoring 20 of her 33 points after halftime.  The sophomore finished with 33 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.  Kate Borseth had 18 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds in the game.  Lilly Johnson added a solid double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.  Emmy Bobula chipped in 8 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.

The Samsons are on the road for their next contest as they head to Minnesota North-Rainy River on Saturday, January 27th.
