GCC Falls at Minnesota North-Rainy River

Three different shots of women playing basketball in uniforms.

The Voyageurs of Minnesota North-Rainy River topped the GCC Samsons 71-50 on Saturday, January 27th in International Falls, MN.

The Samsons got down early as Rainy River quickly went up 8-0.  GCC Freshman Kate Borseth drilled a 3-pointer with 8:09 to go in the opening quarter to put the Samsons on the board. Sophomore Kylee Hewitt scored on the next GCC possession and the Samsons trailed 8-5.  Unfortunately, the Samsons went cold and only scored once more in the quarter and Rainy River's offensive started to roll.  The Voyageurs led 19-7 after the first quarter.

Rainy River's offense continued to roll as the Samsons had trouble finding the bottom of the basket for most of the quarter.  After drilling a 3-pointer with 45 seconds to go, the Voyageurs led 32-14.  When all the momentum seemed liked it was in favor of Rainy River, the Samsons got a huge swing in their favor before halftime.  Borseth was fouled with 29.3 seconds to go. The player who committed the foul disputed the call, and a technical foul was called on that player.  The disagreement about the foul continued and that Rainy River player was ejected from the game.  Borseth hit 4 of the 6 free throws and GCC trailed 32-18.  After a defensive stop, fellow Freshman Annabelle Besonen drilled a 3-pointer to end the quarter and the Samsons only trailed 32-21 at the half.  GCC outscored the Voyageurs in the second quarter, 14-13.

The Voyageurs outscored the Samsons in the third quarter, but only 16-14.  Rainy River led 48-35 after three quarters, but GCC was still within striking distance.  Unfortunately, GCC had missed too many easy basket opportunities, and the Voyageurs outscored the Samsons 23-15 in the final quarter and Rainy River cruised to a 71-50 victory.

Borseth led GCC with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Kylee Hewitt chipped in 14 points for the Samsons.  GCC heads to Brainerd, MN for a clash with Central Lakes College on Wednesday, January 31st.
