Although GCC only had five available players for their Friday night game vs. Itasca, six players were available for the Samsons on Saturday when they faced Rainy River.
Rainy River took an early 6-1 lead and then Samson Ida Bengsston fell to the ground with an ankle injury with 5:31 to go in the first quarter. After Bengsston left the game (she would return to the game in second quarter), the Samsons locked down defensively. Nicole DiGiorgio checked into the game after Bengsston's injury and she gave GCC a great spark off the bench defensively. The Samsons started to get stops and this defensive success ignited the Samsons offense as GCC led 12-6 after the first quarter.
Samson Kylee Hewitt picked up her 2nd personal foul less than a minute into second quarter which put the Voyageurs at the charity stripe. Rainy River split the pair of free throws, but Voyageurs wouldn't score again until 3:51 to go in the second quarter. During that stretch, the GCC lead ballooned from 12-7 to 26-7 as GCC's Ida Bengsston hit a 3-pointer at the top of the key that forced Rainy River to call a timeout to regroup. The Voyageurs continued to chip away at the GCC lead and cut their lead to 12 points (27-15) going into halftime.
The Samsons started the second half still offensively focused on sharing the ball, making the extra pass and taking high percentage shots. As GCC's offense had success throughout the entire quarter, it seem to take the wind out of the sails of Rainy River. With the offense firing on all cylinders, the Samsons stretched out their halftime lead of 12 points to 24 points (43-19).
GCC cruised in the fourth quarter as the Voyageurs were visibly fatigued and frustrated. The Samsons played smart defensively using their length and size to pressure Rainy River's guards while also staying out of foul trouble. The Samsons came away with a 56-28 win over the Voyageurs.
Jasmine Redhouse finished the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. This performance combined with her 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists vs. Itasca, earned Redhouse Tournament MVP honors.
The Samsons hit the road on Tuesday 11/22 for a match up with Mesabi Range.
